Mounting Mount Nebo
From a distance, Mount Nebo does not look particularly impressive. In fact, it looks like little more than a rounded hill, with little vegetation on it. However, the view from the top of the hill is much more iconic.
Mount Nebo is significant to the Jewish and Christian religions. It is said that the Hebrew prophet Moses was brought to Mount Nebo to see the promised land, given to the Israelites by God. In the Christian Bible, it is said that Moses by buried inside Mount Nebo by God. That is one important hill!
No matter what you believe, there is no doubt that Mount Nebo is an important pilgrimage site for many people. The vast majority of people visiting Mount Nebo at the same time as me were clearly visiting with religious groups. They were lead around by older men dressed in robes, and spent a lot of time stopping to pray.
Besides the clear view of the Holy Land (including Jerusalem on a sunny day), there are also some beautiful mosaic floors inside the church that is located on the site.
Pretty amazing stuff. Would love to go there just to people watch for a bit, let along the view and the history.
